چکیده

Cloud RAN (C-RAN) is a promising enabler for distributed massive MIMO systems, yet is vulnerable to its fronthaul congestion. To cope with the limited fronthaul capacity, this paper proposes a hybrid analog-digital precoding design that adaptively adjusts fronthaul compression levels and the number of active radio-frequency (RF) chains out of the entire RF chains in a downlink distributed massive MIMO system based on C-RAN architecture. Following this structure, we propose an analog beamformer design in pursuit of maximizing multiuser sum average data rate (sum-rate). Each element of the analog beamformer is constructed based on a weighted sum of spatial channel covariance matrices, while the size of the analog beamformer, i.e. the number of active RF chains, is optimized so as to maximize the large-scale approximated sum-rate. With these analog beamformer and RF chain activation, a regularized zeroforcing (RZF) digital beamformer is jointly optimized based on the instantaneous effective channel information observed through the given analog beamformer. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid precoding algorithm is validated by simulation, and its design criterion is clarified by analysis.

Massive MIMO operation in partially centralized cloud radio access networks

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered as one of the key technologies in next generation cellular systems due to its higher multiplexing gain and energy efficiency. However, in a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with massive MIMO, operation of many antennas incurs a huge amount of digital sampled data to be transported over the fronthaul link between a baseband unit (BBU)...

GMD-Based Hybrid Precoding For Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems

Hybrid precoding can significantly reduce the number of required radio frequency (RF) chains and relieve the huge energy consumption in mmWave massive MIMO systems, thus attracting much interests from academic and industry. However, most existing hybrid precoding schemes are based on singular value decomposition (SVD). Due to the very different subchannel signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) after SVD...

Interference Reduction in Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems I: Large-Scale Fading Precoding and Decoding

A wireless massive MIMO system entails a large number (tens or hundreds) of base station antennas serving a much smaller number of users, with large gains in spectralefficiency and energy-efficiency compared with conventional MIMO technology. Until recently it was believed that in multicellular massive MIMO system, even in the asymptotic regime, as the number of service antennas tends to infini...

Geometric Mean Decomposition Based Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO

Hybrid precoding can significantly reduce the number of required radio frequency (RF) chains in millimeter-Wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems. However, existing hybrid precoding based on singular value decomposition (SVD) requests the complicated bit allocation to match the different signal-tonoise-ratios (SNRs) of different sub-channels. In this paper, we propose a geometric mean decomposition...
